What time of year should I learn?

Jervis Bay is ideal for learning to kite during the summer months.  From November – April Jervis Bay experiences a high proportion of nor’east winds – steady, onshore breezes that are great for learning to kite.  Jervis Bay is much less busy than many other locations that are used for teaching, though holidaymaker numbers increase during the Christmas and Easter breaks. Water temperatures during summer are usually 20+ degrees.  The warmest water temps are around March/April, whilst it is cooler in October/November.

It is possible to kite in Jervis Bay in the winter months, however the prevailing winds are colder and gustier – southerlies and westerlies – and the water temperature can be below 20 degrees.

How long does it take to learn and how much does it cost?

Learning to kite will take different lengths of time for different people – some students will have their first runs on their first day, others may take a week or more to master these skills.  Our emphasis is not on how quick you can get going, but on creating a safe, enjoyable and thorough learning program so you can progress at a rate that suits you.

Mexicans 2Can I have a lesson with my friend?

We offer a number of different approaches to lessons, from individual to small group lessons so you can learn with a friend if you would like to.  We also try to tailor our lessons to suit your individual needs.

What should I bring with me?

You need to bring with you:

Appropriate wetsuit (a shortie wetsuit is often warm enough for summer months when the water is 20+ degrees, however a long wetsuit can be useful for extra protection and added warmth if you are going to spend a long time in the water)

Wetsuit booties (if you wish to wear them)

Warm clothes and towel for after your lesson

Sunscreen, sunglasses.

Water and snacks

Do I need my own kiteboarding equipment?

No, we will supply:

Kites

Boards

Harness (helmets? Flotation devices? Etc)

Can I bring my own kite and board to learn on? marco 1

If you already have your own gear you are more than welcome to use it to learn on.  Our instructors will check that it is safe and appropriate and will help you to become familiar with it.

How old/strong/experienced do I need to be?

You do not require any prior experience in kiteboarding – we will teach you from Step 1.

You do not need to be particularly strong as you are attached to the kite with a harness, however a reasonable level of fitness will be helpful.  We generally anticipate that most people between the ages of 10 and 70 will be able to learn to kiteboard.

Do I need to be able to swim?

IMPORTANT: it is essential that you can swim confidently in the ocean in deep water.

Do I need any other skills?

You don’t need any other specific skills, however sailing, windsurfing and paragliding may help you with understanding the wind and weather, and skateboarding, wakeboarding, surfing or snowboarding may help you with board skills.
